I first discovered PLA when I was 10 or so. I read the mcdonalds sign prank first and i thought it was hilarious. Since then I check back often for updates and i enjoy the radio shows. Thanks a lot RBCP for filling the void in my life... My own mediocre attempt at humor has been highly amusing to myself.

I've been comming to the site for a log time now.  I've been on the internet for about 16 years or so.  I don't remember exactly, but I think it was 1995/96 or so when I found it.  Over the years I think i've read everything on the site.  I might not have been much of a participator, but the years of laughs and fun have been great.  PLA has been around for a while and I hope it will be around for a very long time.

How old were you?  Where did it happen?  How long ago?  To what degree has the PLA impacted your life?  If you could go back in time would you kill me to keep it from existing?  Below are a few excerpts from a few of the forum members.

I was 16, it was 1996, and apparently it has impacted my life a great deal because HERE I AM 10 YEARS LATER AND I STILL CANNOT GET AWAY FROM YOU PEOPLE! :)

I "discovered" the PLA in early 2004 while searching for "how to hack" on Google. Since then, I've seen technology in a very different way. And a different, more evil side of me has spoken.

It happened for me a year or so ago, around early '05, when I was 15 (so do the math, I'm 16 now).  My friend was talking to me about how there was such a thing called phone hacking, and proceeded to tell me about how pay phones use tones to tell how much money you put in.  He then told me about redboxing and linked me to this site's redboxing page.  I looked around on this site and didn't think much of it at the time, as I was way too into figuring out how to redbox.  My friend started telling me about how you all were pranking fast food places using a scanner a few months later.  I thought about how cool that was and how some of my friends and I really wanted to try it and get a scanner.   We all haven't gotten one yet ><  It was about then that I started to go to the site more often, maybe once a week or so.  I read the history, checked out some of the articles, and stuff like that.  I also looked at other phone hacking pages, learning more and more about different ways I can hack.  I then learned on how phreaking was slowly dying, and not many people do it as much anymore.  It made me sad, because I've missed out on the phone phreaking days.  If only I was born years earlier...sigh.  When the radio started up, I listened to it.  I loved it, and still do.  It's hilarious and has some really sweet stuff on it.  I wish the episodes would come out faster.  Then, I started visiting the site more than twice a week or more.  When Skype became free, I started being a cheap ass and manually started scanning numbers in New York (funny story:  I thought I had been doing NY at first, but it turned out to be Washington DC.  I found some strange stuff there) and my own home area.  I also tried 1-800 numbers.  I was basically in search of DATUs, modems/carriers, elevators, and test messages.  When I heard modems, I decided to give my newly-found Cisco Networking skills (yes, I take that class in school) to connect to it using Hyperterminal.  Sometimes, I would find some very cool things.  I found a government-protected one that told me to leave or I would be prosecuted under the full extent of the law.  Along with my own scans, I dialed numbers from other lists to see for myself what the modems said, and also to see if they changed.  Most are still the same. I wish you all would go and produce scans again for random areas.  I missed out on all that stuff. That was another reason I checked out this site. I was looking to see if you all had numbers, but sadly I found out that it was all discontinued.  :(

Right now, I'm trying to figure out how I can make some sort of program that can scan using Skype so I don't need to sit there and dial each number individually...ugh.  Basically, I am a phreaker/hacker at heart.  I love to do it.  It's interesting to discover strange things, like using payphones and connecting to their test lines.  Now, I go to the site probably every day.

So there's my story.

I first discovered the PLA around 97-98, ironically by following a link on the Happy Hacker
website. I remember being immediately hooked by the unique blend of humor, the always
wacky exploits of RBCP, and practical and interesting information. I do believe I read all of the
PLA issues in one sitting. I also have some vague memory of making some sort of naive and
embarrassing post on some section about PLA meetings.

I didn't really become active in the scene until I started posting regularly on the now defunct
United Phone Losers board. Man, sometimes I miss the UPL, until I remember how the later
issues started to lose the PLA charm, and become more like the thousand other hacker zines.

After Linear ran off to become a shaolin monk I started going through alternating periods of
lurking/posting on the forums. There is where my proudest moment on the internets occurred,
when RBCP used my idea for the McDonalds sign prank. I still haven't topped that, and remained to scared to talk to him. OMG Internet Celebrity!

And now I registered an account here at the latest revision of the forums to post this. It's all come full circle.

I think the PLA was, and still is, the best introduction to the H/P scene an impressionable young geek can have.

Although the PLA has had a profound impact on my life, Mithrandir_t00 has made a much greater mark.

The later issues were edited by RTF, and consisted of some of the funnier stuff we put out. If by "lose the PLA charm" you mean i stopped stealing PLA content, i guess I can't argue that.

Well, after actually checking the old issues, I see that the later ones were actually better the the early ones. I stand corrected.

But still, what happened that made you leave the temple? Was there a ninja attack?

I discovered the PLA probably 6 or so years ago. I used to do investigations and repossessions, and I found a good deal of useful info here on Social Engineering on the PLA site.

I found originally found the site while I was looking for info on cna's. I used to know a heroin addict who could get a cna on any number within 5 minutes. She would come to my office with her black book, kick me out and make a phone call. Five minutes and $25 later I had my info. She always had to ride the bus to get to me. I'm not sure whether she blew all her cash on drugs or got busted one too many times for DUI. Naturally, relying on a heroin addict had its down side...she was often pretty hard to reach when I needed her. That's why I set out to find out how she got her info.

I never did learn how she did it. She's probably dead now, so I'll never know; but the info I got here (from you crazy kids) was of great value. I have since moved on to a more pleasant line of work, but I still enjoy reading about the PLA and its activities. Thanks for years of fun and entertainment, RBCP!

Back in 2000 I was looking for a messageboard script and came across the old fruitware scripts. Then I just got caught up in all the other stuff. What got me hooked was the Curtis Lee stuff. That was fun.
