What the hell is a podcast?
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:35:32 PM »
I'm curious how many users here learned about podcasting because of PLA Radio.  I don't think I'd ever even heard the term podcasting until January of 2006 when I read about it in Wired magazine.  Then a month later I began PLA Radio.  I'd heard of "audio blogging" but I thought that just referred to making Livejournal-like posts via your phone or a microphone.  Which sounds really unappealing to me.  Even though many of the podcasts I listen to center around the daily misadventures of the wacky hosts.

Answer the following questions too.  Because I'm curious.

1. Do you listen to any other podcasts besides PLA Radio and/or Big Beef Bueno?  Which ones?  Provide links!

2. How do you listen?  Via Itunes, , Ipodder, your mp3 player or just by downloading the mp3s from the websites?

3. What are the odds that you will start your own podcast?

I'm a podcasting addict.  All I ever listen to anymore are podcasts.  I start off almost every morning by listening to The Distorted View.  It's a 30 minute show and has some amazingly fucked up shit in it.  Everyone here should go and listen to at least one episode.

I'm also a big fan of The PK&J Show.  You'll notice that their recent shows have quite a few PLA references in them.  The show's a little too political for me sometimes, but it's a fun show and I never miss it.

Another great show is Corby's Twisted Pickle.  It's one of those "audio blog" kind of shows, but he's got some great stories.  Of of the most hilarious aspects of the show is that his wife doesn't know the show exists.  He's been doing it for more than a year now, he's flown to California twice for the Podcast Expo, he's got tons of fans contributing all kinds of things to his show.  And she has no idea.  She's even been on the show before, when he recorded her with his handheld digital recorder.  And their 3-year-old daughter is a regular contributer to the show.  Man, is the wife going to be surprised one of these days...

If you prefer the wacky morning show format, two very professional-sounding shows are Red Bar Radio and Nobody LIkes Onions.  Red Bar does some hilarious prank calls and has probably the most professional sounding podcast I've ever heard.  And you might remember Nobody Likes Onions from an old PLA Radio episode.  The host is kind of a wanna-be shock jock, always trying really hard to be as offensive as possible.  Both very popular and very good shows.  I don't listen to either of them very often, only because their shows are very long and frequent.  I don't have the time to keep up with them.

There's tons more that I listen to.  I'll post them all on here later.  You can find podcasts on pretty much any topic, though.  Two good directories are podcastpickle.com and podcastalley.com.  There's even podcasts for the KKK and pedophiles.  Now that's free radio.

 Regarding your questions:

1- I only listen yours and by transition Nate's podcast.
2- in both cases I used the website tool I've found, I can't download it since I'm at work while listening.
3- 0.0 and even less in english, do you know what it feels to sound like Antonio Banderas and pretend to sound attractive for the American public? That would be suicide!!! besides I have no idea from where to start, but I would dare to perform only one if you are willing to help me to set up the first show.

I don't really listen to any other podcasts besides yours and the ones that end up posted on here (ie CountyKid's).  I usually download them from the website and listen while I'm surfing teh internets or cooking or something.  I doubt I'll ever start a podcast, simply because I have no good ideas for one.

I love pod casts. I usually listen to the ESPN or TSN podcast for sports highlights. I also listened to Power 106 FMs' podcast ( a gangsta radio station in LA)

I usually listen to all my podcasts when sitting at my computer, or else at school... It's allot more phun learning about the PLA than what we're "supposed" to learn..

I am currently working on a podcast... If I dont fall back into the spiral of death that is laziness It will probably be out by the end of the month.

I am considering making a podcast. It would be called PLAdcast, naturally pronounced "plodcast," and feature everyone from the PLA except Arbie. I'm thinking, 15 to 20 minutes of anything decent people are willing to send me, though I'd definitely like to give it an informational edge (every other podcast is made of prank calls...). Phones are really sweet, so news or information about phones would rock, but I won't say it would be limited to just that.

If anyone has something they'd like to submit, just message me on AIM and send away.

I just listen to the PLA podcast, but I'm writing down some ideas for my own once my new site is up and running.

Not sure if it even counts but the only podcast I had listened to before the PLA Radio was a podcast from a local radio station (can search it on iTunes "WMMR's Preston and Steve") that I can never catch because I'm in school. Some of the stuff is pretty amusing. Haven't even listened to that in a while though.

PLA Radio was the only thing that made it to my MP3 player though... it comes on and off depending on how much space I have left on the player and what I'm in the mood to hear.

And as for making my own podcast some day... I do have some plans for PLJ (Phone Losers of Jersey) Radio. It will consist of nothing but PLA Radio episodes, only haxxored with PLJ or Jersey in place of the spots where you say PLA or RBCP, respectively. I think its got a chance to compete.

Hell, I didn't even know PLA had a podcast until it was a few episodes in.

Apparently our school has video ipods that teachers can rent out for their classes and were having a podcast class on day. Seems pointless to be doing in a legal systems class but whatever, I'll try to put some PLA stuff on one.

i had heard of podcasting a long time ago...i've tried a bunch of podcasts before, but the only ones i've been able to get through more than a few episodes of have been Phone Losers and Savage Love.  [as for Savage Love, what can i say?  i'm an advice junkie...i love to dispense it, and i love to listen to what others dispense.]

i just get them through iTunes...it looks for it automatically, and i'm lazy.  :)

i'm not planning on starting my own, ever.  i have a tendency to ramble a lot, and i can only imagine people would find my podcast extremely boring.

Since this thread has already been resurrected I'm going to take this oppurtunity to ask a question. What type of hardware and software does RBCP use to record PLA radio?

We know he's too hardcore to take the advice of people on the voicemail about popping his "P"s (though to be honest that guy sounded like a bit of a wad, way to go if you kept it up just to piss him off).
