Birthday gifts for a former phreaker

(1/2) > >>

Molotov_Cocktail:
I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct place for this but I wasn't quite sure where to ask.

My boyfriend was into phreaking years ago (1995 - 2002) and mentions it every now and then, I feel like it's something that was a huge hobby of his. His 30th birthday is coming up and I wanted to do something for him that was a little more memorable and special then the usual load of thinkgeek presents.

So I suppose I'm looking for suggestions or ideas for a phreaking related gift? I don't know enough about the equipment used to search myself and would appreciate any and all help.

Mister Skin:
Good Afternoon,

I'd recommend picking up a lineman's handset somewhere. You can get them on eBay, some of which have the Buy-It-Now option. They can run anywhere from 10 to 250$ for a vintage rotary one to a new Harris Dracon TS-22.

Phone company hard hats. Phone company shirts.

Payphone parts, like a T payphone key or a payphone handset. With some electronic knowledge, you can wire it up to just about anything.

For 600$, you can get him an old phone booth.

An old payphone?

Or, you could buy a slimline phone at Goodwill, throw away the cradle, keep the handset, strip the plug off and attach alligator clips from RadioShack/Fry's onto the green and red wires, while cutting/tying the other wires off...

Or, buy him a PLA Shirt!

I hope these suggestions have helped. If my girlfriend were to get me any of these, I would be shocked at her total 31337-ness.

Good luck!

MIB:
If he likes to read, PLA The Book is another gift idea.

You could get him a Radio Shack tone dialer from eBay and a 6.5536 MHz crystal.  I have one last 6.5536 crystal here that I could donate.

Mister Skin:
Providing he has a 43-147 tone dialer.

Red boxes are dead and gone. Buy something from Brad Carter and Associates, LLC
